Conversion of a waste recycling plant to an exhibition hall.

The project is located in the Jinwan district of Pudong and was originally a waste recycling plant. Following extensive remodelling, the building is now used as an exhibition building for the future urban transformation of the surrounding area. Despite the completely new use, it was important to us to retain parts of the existing building structure. The building was shortened, the supporting structure was retained, a new circulation system was created and the façades were opened up and re-clad.

In view of the planned construction sites in the immediate vicinity, which will be built over the next two to three years, the architectural interior design was deliberately conceived to be introverted. Three ‘courtyards’ connect the spatial structure. An extension on the west side connects the north and south buildings and creates an inner courtyard enclosed on three sides with an opening to the east. The two atriums function as internal ‘courtyards’ and connect with the outer courtyard to form a multi-layered spatial structure. The main exhibition spaces are located on the upper floor to provide a better view of the surroundings and create a close visual connection between the city planning of Jinwan and the construction site outside the windows.
