Blockhaus Nikolskoe

New identity for a historic restaurant.

The Nikolskoe Blockhouse was commissioned by Frederick William III of Prussia and built in 1819 on the occasion of the visit of his daughter Charlotte and her husband Nicholas I of Russia, the future Emperor. Together with the neighbouring St Peter and Paul's Church, the former Freischule and the Pfaueninsel Cemetery, the Blockhouse forms an architectural ensemble that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin".

We were asked to develop a new identity for the restaurant's guest areas. The most important thing was to get rid of the historicising elements of the last few decades and to expose the impressive wooden structure made from entire tree logs. In addition to the minimalist furniture, which echoes the circularity in its details, light plays the main role in this subtle transformation. Different atmospheres are created by the deliberate distribution of diffuse and focused light sources.
