Pfefferbett

Hostel in a former energy plant.

House 6 on the Pfefferberg, an old 19th century brewery, was originally used as a power station for the site. Today it is used as a hostel. The large vertical space has been exposed as much as possible to emphasise the historic steel construction. All the programmes, the reception, the café, the bar, the internet stations and the information desk have been grouped together in a minimalist furniture-like element and clad in sheet metal. The formal design of this element is strictly based on the functionality of the individual programmes and integrates the entire infrastructure. The concept of the project was to create a new space that respects the historical elements and at the same time is equipped with a multifunctional hostel lobby. The aim was to create a place that tells the story of both the long history of the site and the contemporary dynamics of Berlin.
