Refugium Beelitz

Conversion of a historic sanatorium into studio residences.

The Beelitz Refugium is located 30km South-West of Berlin. The project is an adapt-refurbishment of an abandoned and historically significant healthcare facility that was used primarily for the treatment of tuberculosis before the invention of anti-biotics. The buildings were later used as a Russian war hospital. The buildings are serene in their rural seclusion, yet remain close enough to commute easily to Berlin via local train service.

The buildings were in a poor state when we found them. Major interventions were therefore necessary to make the spaces usable again and to be able to offer attractive residential studios. However, it was important to us to leave the traces of history visible. A strategy was developed in close consultation with the conservation authorities to carefully transform the venerable rooms.
